Cha Cha Cha changes!!

Libby is the app that the library uses to loan ebooks and audiobooks. For years now, Libby and it's predecessor had three+ choices when the book you had requested became available. You could check it out. You could say no thank you and let it go OR you could extend the hold for a week, a month, a few months... pick a date. Then you just waited until it became available again.

This was not ideal. Most often when you were ready to read the book, it was not ready for you and vice versa. But, now they have changed the playing field. You can no longer pick the amount of time. Now your only option is 'suspend the hold'. This might work better but it does mean you have to go in and do stuff when you are ready to read the book and, when you are ready, the book might not be. It's ok really. Having audiobooks available from the library is just the greatest thing ever so I'm totally willing to try their new scheme.

But also other changes.

I was always amused, in the corporate world, to watch the managerial schematics. They would decide that consolidation was the tickets and reswizzle smaller groups into bigger ones. Then, after a few years, it was Divide and Conquer and they'd divide up all those bigger groups into smaller ones. Lather, rinse, repeat.

I was reminded of this last night. When I first moved off of cable, I tried consolidated TV situation - YouTube TV, Fubo, DirectTV. The last two were because they carried Mariners baseball. But, they also carried a shitload of other TV plus live TV. The I killed them all and went with the apps. Paramount + for CBS, etc. Peacock for NBC, Hulu for Fox and ABC, and a handful of others. I even tried Hulu Live (which sucked). Now, as it happens, a lot of my app services are coming to the end of subscriptions. I have been tracking and thinking about this for a while. It's not entirely a money issue. It's also an ease of watching and keeping track of what I've watched issue and news. I tried living without watching news for a while and didn't like that. I tried appointment news - watching when it aired. And didn't like that. About the time I decided to try YouTube.TV again, they got into a pissing match with ABC and a bunch of other networks. So I shelved the project.

But, last night, everyone kissed and made up and I signed up for YouTube.TV again. I killed it more than 3 years ago but it still had my settings! So setting up the rest was not a big deal. Now I have a host of things to watch now instead of Christmas shit. Food Network, PBS, (I'm caught up on Masterpiece but not the rest), Nat Geo, HGTV, Law and Order Toronto! I'm excited.

Wonder how long it will take me to decide this is way more than I need and I should just watch what I want via the individual apps. hahahaha

I just got an email from my insurance company (United Health Care). It's about the 12th one telling me that things will change with Medicare in 2026. This time it was about drugs. 'Check how the changes will affect you.' So I clicked on the link and while it loaded, I got the names of my drugs ready to copy. But, lo!, the link was to my account and they filled in my drugs and the changes is... drumroll, please, my drugs cost me $0 last year. And next year? My drugs will cost me $0. I can live with that change.

I did laundry yesterday so today I will just be knitting and watching TV and maybe puzzling. But first, a swim.

GILES: Details? Well, it says this Slayer forged her own weapon.
BUFFY: Gotta love a gal with an anvil. But where are the details of the Slayer's last battle? You know, what made that fight special? Why did she lose?
GILES: You didn't lose last night, Buffy. You just-
BUFFY: Got really close. I slipped up, Giles. I've been training harder than ever and still I... And there's nothing in any of these books to help me understand why. I mean... look, I realize that every Slayer comes with an expiration mark on the package. But I want mine to be a long time from now. Like a Cheeto. If there were just a few good descriptions of what took out the other Slayers, maybe it would help me to understand my mistake, to keep it from happening again.

Saturday

We got a puzzle lamp for the elbow! Yesterday Jan and Dick called with a tech emergency. On my way down there, I spied the new puzzle lamp. A long time ago, the floor leader, who is generally, down to her last marble, sent out an email asking if we wanted a puzzle table and lamp for our elbow. I responded, immediately, YES!! Turns out, I was supposed to gather the floor together and take a vote. Whatfucking ever. I like my way better. But, anyway since she's rarely right, I figure it was an exercise in email anyway and would never turn into anything but, now we have a lamp! And it's VERY helpful.

And Jan and Dick's issue was fairly easy to noodle out. People who don't use right clicks miss out on so much in life.

Volleyball was good again this morning. It was a good group of players.

Elbow coffee is next. And then, nothing planned til next week which turns out to be kind of busy. I do kind of have this idea of organizing my yarn but that idea might never see the outside of my head.

the cosmic ballet goes on

Posted by Wil

A couple nights ago, my sister sent me a picture of the gorgeous aurora over her house in the upper midwest, so I took a picture in my back yard and sent it to her, to share my own view of the phenomena:

We do this every time she can see the aurora. It’s never not funny to both of us. I really love and cherish my sister.

A couple hours went by, and I looked at Bluesky, where I saw that this particular aurora event was a straight up phenomenon that was really blowing the skies up all over the place. The photos people were posting from all over North America, as far south as New Mexico, were all breathtaking.

So I had a silly idea that resulted in some alt text that I am so obnoxiously proud of, not only did I repost my own post yesterday, explicitly for more than five people to see it, I wrote a whole damn blog post so I could post this:

ALT TEXT: An extremely real photograph of the Aurora Borealis, its gossamer shrouds of red and green blown by the solar wind across the skies above Los Angeles. Definitely not a fake if you were wondering. I mean why would anyone even fake something like that? Because he’s like jealous of everyone who gets to see it for real tonight? Pfft! That’s just silly. Go back to enjoying the very real picture of nature’s very real majesty that was just taken in the skies above Los Angeles. Oh and if you go outside to look for yourself you probably won’t see it because it was almost out of science energy and was kind of just vanishing. Good thing there’s a real picture of it from someone who really saw it, to remember it.

I had fun with that, and it made me laugh a lot. Everything is terrible (some things are getting better! He will die soon!) so it’s more important to me than ever that I make time and space to laugh and have fun. One of the ways I have always done that is by allowing myself to be easily amused and entertained.

You made it to the end of another week! Congratulations. I hope you get to spend your weekend with people who love you.

Friday

I found the wine. I had some with dinner last night. It was good but not life changing good. Oh well, at least now I know. I do wonder however, if that half glass was partially responsible for my 97% sleep score last night. I am for sure a cheap drunk.

As long as it is not milk. I am a holier than thou person about health shit. I know it. I spent most of my life believing that allergies were psychosomatic. Until daily allergy pills helped (not cured, mind you, but helped) my forever runny nose. But, now, it's for sure, I'm also lactose intolerant. I have loved milk all my life. But a couple of years ago, it seemed to turn on me. So I quit drinking it. But, I miss it. So yesterday I tried again. One tablespoon over my oatmeal at breakfast. By noon, I was paying the diarrheal price. fuck. I cream is ok in small doses. cheese is fine. Dr. Google says that old person lactose intolerance is not unusual at all. Great. now I can't have milk and I'm a cliche. Fuck.

It's another dark and rainy day here today. I do love the cozy of that. And, of course, it takes my swim up several notches on the enjoyment scale. This is all because I do not have to ever go outside. One of the local Continuing Care Retirement Communities, I looked at (on web only) was a cluster of buildings. You had to go outside to get to the dining room, to get to the front desk, to go to the library... What a PIA that would be.

Since I rarely go outside... yesterday, I wore my crocks - ones with holes - when I went to the grocery. BAD idea. The rain was coming down, which was not an issue BUT the small lakes that that created in the parking lot were a big issue. I need outdoor shoes. Wellies for grocery shopping! Or at least shoes without holes. And I need to remember to wear them.

I have no plans to go outside today. My freezer is full and my meal money account is bursting at the seams.

I think I'll go make up the bed and hop into my suit and do a few dozen laps in the pool.

Better

Tuesday's volleyball left me not interested in ever playing again. Today's volleyball saved the day. It was fun and invigorating.

Major cult news in today's Timber Ridge Times... Julie is retiring at the end of the year. Julie is the hair dresser. She knows EVERYTHING about EVERYBODY. She's also delightful. And come January she'll be gone. This is big. Really big. She does the hair of everyone - men and women - except me. And, on Mondays, she spends the day in Briarwood - which houses assisted living, the nursing rooms and the memory care unit.

Having someone else do their hair is huge for some of these old people. It will give them something to bitch about for months on end. I can hear Joan now.

And, also, they have finally found a nail person who will be starting soon. Everyone will be all atwitter about this one. I can't wait until elbow coffee on Saturday!

This morning, I am going to pop over to QFC to buy wine. I never drink wine but a couple of weeks ago, at dinner, Bonny pulled out a bottle of Cabernet and offered it up. It was delicious. It turns out to be pretty cheap wine that also keeps well (with a vacuum sealer) so I decided to get some. The internets say it's at QFC and Fred Meyers. Neither place has it on the shelf that I can see nor did they have anyone to ask when I was there. Now I am on a fucking quest. QFC said the wine guy was there in the mornings. So I'm going back this morning to see if I can find him or the friggin wine.

And, really, that's the extent of my to-do list. As it stands now.

Oh wait, no. I do need to cut my hair. Maybe I'll go do that now.

WIL WHEATON dot NET ([syndicated profile] wwdn_feed) wrote2025-11-12 11:53 pm

you walk outside, and everything just says “SOON”

Posted by Wil

There is a massive winter storm barreling toward us right now, expected to arrive in the next 18 or so hours. Yesterday, it was unseasonably warm and stupidly beautiful. Today, it’s eerily calm, under grey skies. The air is so still, it carries the train whistles from all the way across the valley, and every lawnmower in town sounds like it’s next door. You walk outside, and everything just says, soon.1 Even the corvids and squirrels seem reluctant to come out of the trees, It never rains in Southern California, man. It pours.

This past weekend, though, it was great, and I was grateful for it.

Last Friday, Anne and I celebrated our 26th wedding anniversary. We have both been so busy and overwhelmed for so long, we planned to skip our usual weekend getaway and just go out for a really fancy dinner, instead. So we went to Mozza in Hollywood, where I think Anne discovered that pasta can actually be wonderful and not what her husband struggles to assemble in our kitchen.

We had such a wonderful meal, and such a nice time out, on a Friday night like PEOPLE WHO GO OUT TO DO THINGS! And that would have been enough, but about two weeks ago, Anne said that she was really missing our usual weekend away, and how did I feel about using points to go somewhere close? I admitted that I, too, was feeling sad we weren’t going to have two days of absolutely nothing but Us. Funny how we both really wanted to do this together, but kept talking ourselves out of it because we’d agreed together that we would.

Anyway, she found a place, cashed in some points, and we spent the weekend up in Santa Barbara. It was nothing but long walks, petting dogs, eating incredible food, and prioritizing each other, our relationship, our friendship, and our marriage. Each of us truly is married to our best friend, and even after 26 years (30+ total), we still have all kinds of fun goofing off together. We have consistently done the hard work of being married and being a family, and that investment pays off at like fifty million percent all the time.

It’s just like … it’s such a blessing and so awesome to spend our lives together, and be mom and dad to our kids. We have worked really hard for a good life, and I’m grateful that I’ve worked so hard to heal my PTSD, so I can actually enjoy living it.

And now…

This week’s story dropped earlier today! It is Dissembling Light, by Kel Coleman. It originally appeared in Beneath Ceaseless Skies issue 385.

This is a magical story (meaning that Magic features prominently in the narrative) about a man who holds tremendous knowledge and skill in his heart, and the hopeful apprentice who comes to learn from him. It also makes me wonder what good is knowledge, if its holder doesn’t freely share it?

You can get It’s Storytime With Wil Wheaton wherever you get your podcasts. Here’s some links to the more popular services:

You can also support the show on Patreon, where you’ll get the show with no ads, as well as some spiffy extras that all the cool kids are into these days.

Today, I recorded two episodes. One of the things we did is the most beautiful, heartbreaking, I-need-a-minute-to-compose-myself story I have read in a long, long time. I’m so excited for you to hear it. It’s also the source of the show’s first official blooper, where you will get to hear me use all my, uh, colorful metaphors in rather creative ways.

I would absolutely love to hear your feedback on the show, if you’re a listener. I feel like we’re doing good work, and putting good art into the world, but I have no idea what the audience thinks if I don’t ask, because we aren’t exactly in a theater together. Although, if I can figure out how to stage one of these stories, I’m into seeing what that would look and sound like. Maybe something cool is there, way off in the mysterious future.

  1. Unfortunately, it’s not the soon we are all waiting for ↩

A new, better day

Yesterday had a fair amount of frustration, disappointment, sad and fail in it. It was a rare bad day but today will ensure that rare stays rare. I will insist on it.

It wasn't all bad. Every year for the past decade +, my friend, Scott, has sent me a calendar from New Zealand. They are all big beautiful wall calendars. I have a spot where I hang each one and toss it when the next year's arrives. I used to not appreciate them as much as I do now. His calendar came yesterday and he's broken the bank. It's one I will never ever toss. It's a masterpiece.

He took 13 photos - from their trip here last Summer and from New Zealand and made a calendar just for me. I love sheep so here's the cover.

PXL_20251112_012833327

And look at January!!! This is at Timber Ridge's front door taken just before they left.

PXL_20251112_012414837.TS-000

The other months are full of fun stops they made like the Corn Palace. It's just a masterpiece. December is a beautiful iconic shot of their town. The whole thing is just a delight. I love it

I did end up going to Fred Meyers yesterday. It's a very large store. It's a huge grocery store but also a huge everything store - clothes, shoes, kitchen, bedding, etc. It's on the other side of town from here and kind of an ordeal since it is so big. Lots of people from here shop there, just not me. They do have stuff that other places don't so it was interesting and GREAT for steps. (And my leg that has been really bothering me, did not. so yeah.)

Among other things, I picked up a package of Boston Creme Pie poptart pastries. The woman in front of me in the checkout line had a fit when she saw them. She checked out, paid for her stuff, and then went back to get them. I had very low expectations. But, I tried one last night and, dang, it was delish!!

Screenshot 2025-11-12 8.49.45 AM

But, check out the price difference between QFC and Fred Meyer! They are both owned by Kroger. QFC is very near here so it's where I always go. I would not have been surprised by a small price difference but this difference is sure not small. Wild.

Today, an 'executive' of LCS which is the company that owns/runs Timber Ridge is coming to discuss continuing care here. I just went to the LCS website to see if I could get some dets on him. The website has photos and bios of about 35 executives. The guy coming today didn't make the cut. His title is Vice President/Senior Director of Operations Management. So... apparently he's all title and no clout.

The promise here is continued care. You live here independently, then, when needed, you move to assisted care and then, when needed you move to nursing care and then you die. It's pretty straightforward EXCEPT there are often no nursing beds available when needed and NEVER enough assisted living apartments. And, no room to build more. So all these old people are looking ahead and getting very twitchy. It's been the top concern here since I moved in. So the company is sending this guy with the title to soothe the natives. I might go.

Ooops I just realized that I don't have enough time to go if I swim first. Oh well, they are having two sessions so I'll just swim now and go to the second one. I sure don't care enough to give up my swim.

I should read this journal

Seems like it was just yesterday I was pointing out that I need to get control over those things that annoy me and not let them annoy me. FAIL. Volleyball. Martha's husband, Richard, pointed out last week that when the right mix of people are playing, it is such fun. And when there is a spoiler in the bunch, it is just not. Fun. We have a spoiler. And it's not even the asshole. Or the woman who shreds my hand with her long nails. So... yeah... we have multiple people who work hard to ensure it is not as fun as it could be. And this morning I let it work on me. My bad. But...

Old people.

I think maybe I need a change of scenery. Even if brief. So I will go out and do my Amazon return. Maybe at lunch. Or maybe when the house cleaner comes this afternoon.

Oh remember the soy sauce situation? Well, I bought another bottle, filled up my little soy sauce jar and went to put the rest in the cabinet where it belongs. But it was a tight squeeze because... there was a nearly full bottle of soy sauce already there!! WTF?

So, now, whenever I get on my high horse about being sharper than all these old people around here, I hope someone just says to me "soy sauce." Myrna would have. God, I miss her.

Ok, I think I'll go out now. Before my leg gets too tired from the day as it is want to do lately. And, I think I'm going to go to Fred Meyer. It's always such a chore because it is so huge but they have different stuff and I want different stuff and need a change of grocery scenery.

So off I go.

OMG

The Great British Bake off set the rules. And many others followed - often quite successfully. There's the glass blowing show, the face painting show, the potters show. One of the best is the Great British Sewing Bee has done it very successfully for a bunch of seasons.

They all have required key ingredients: Two judges, one or two hosts, two or three different kinds of projects - short, long and different - all required to be completed in a very short amount of time. And contestants who make a mistake and cry and say they are going to leave... One contestant wins each week and one contestant is kicked off the show.

It was time for the perfect parody and now we have it.

It's only on BBC 4 but someone finally uploaded (YouTube) an episode of Game of Wool - or as it should have been called The Great British Wool off. I just watched it. As a show to highlight a craft (or crafts, as they hit on knitting and crochet) and those who are very good about it, it's quite the failure. But, as a parady of all those other shows, it's perfection.

Timed knitting or crocheting is as successful as slow drag racing. But this show makes fun of every single element of its predecessors. Beautifully.

Lather, rinse, repeat

I do like my life and one thing I like about it is the lack of drama. Today is pretty much like yesterday and the day before and the... Get up, hope for clouds, swim, do puzzles, watch TV and knit creatures. A little wrinkle here or there, but mostly, same old, same old which is exactly what I want.

One thing I do need to guard against is annoyance. Because everything is fine and not annoying, I tend to nit pick things that would normally just go unnoticed. I need to make a special effort to make those still go unnoticed. I have varying degrees of success at this. I'm hoping for more.

I did all the pills. I'm good til mid-February. I did all the laundry. I'm good til all those clothes get dirty again. I have $4.50 of meal money that I need to spend today, the 10th.

My eggshell topper turns out to also provide good stability for my back stretches/exercises. I found a guy on YouTube yesterday who talked about back/leg pain in people over 70. The whys and wherefores. And, of course, he had exercises and stretches but, except for one, they were the ones I'd been doing. But, now I know why.

It's a lovely cloudy morning with no sun peeking through. My swim will be good.

I think I'll go do that now.

Sunday

I'm really appreciating this eggshell topper on my bed. It's just the loveliest feeling of cozy. Weird and wild. I'm so glad I didn't go full new mattress. I did wake up this morning with a very sore leg - it was part of my dream. But, once I quit lying on it, it healed up nicely. I've been up an hour now and it has totally forgiven me.

I got the highest sleep scores I have ever seen from Fitbit. 87!!

This is one of the first non-rainy days we've had in a while. The sun is out. Hopefully, I can just drop the blinds in the pool and not have to fight the glare.

I have an Amazon return that I might take today. I bought a Fire TV stick to see if it's gotten any better or the years. The Prime app on Roku has been annoying me and I'm using it more so I figured a Fire stick might ease the issue. It didn't. Plus, while the Roku Prime app can be slow, the same app on Amazon's fire stick did not even work some of the time. Plus, another remote. Not worth it. So I popped onto to Amazon to start the return. And, I got an interesting offer. I selected 'no longer needed' as my reason and filled in that it did not work as desired in the comments. No, don't want to interact with a technician. Then I got a box saying that if I just wanted to keep it, they would give me a discount! The thing cost me $32 in total. They offered me $5 off. Yeah, nope. I've had them tell me to just keep the item. But, I've never had a price reduction offer before.

There is a new puzzle started in the elbow and TV to watch and creatures to knit. So that's my plan for today. After I do my swim.
