Everyone has a facade they show the public. Some do it unthinkably.

Others will cultivate a public persona.

When Buffy woke in her coffin, she knew terror beyond any she had ever known.

Now once back in her own world, she presented a persona to those around her.

She couldn’t allow her friends and family to know she was broken.

They depended on her to be who she had always been for them.

The Slayer. The Chosen One.

She didn’t feel much chosen these days.

So she played the part. She forged a public persona and it was killing her.

He was amazed the Scoobies couldn’t see her pain.

They were like puppies that depended on her to care for them.

Even Giles seemed to be unaware of how she was suffering.

He knew she would never let them see her tears.

So away from her adoring public, Spike allowed her to let go.

And each time she fell apart, he was there to catch her.

To let her work it out on him instead of them or herself.

She would curse him, cling to him, use him till he was raw.

After all, he was only a soulless monster.
