I have some horrible days doing returns in retail. Every once in awhile I have a guest who makes it better. Today a guest asked me if I had any stories of people just being crazy. Of course I do. During Christmas our store manager said we could not hold anything for any reason. Woman called demanding we hold an item that you use to slip under the door knob to prevent anyone from opening the door. I tried to explain that currently we were not holding anything. We had ten of the item she wanted. She then started screaming at me over the phone. Her son broke into her house so the lock on the door wouldn't lock. She had to pick up a dead dog on the road by her house to take to the vet. She didn't want to have to rush to the store to buy that item. I explained she could place an order online and pick it up or use the service where you place an order and a shopper would bring it to your home for a fee. Nope, we had to hold it for her because she was too busy to do any of those. She was what we call a special snowflake. My guest busted out laughing after hearing that. Made my day.

Oh, not me. This past weekend was tax free weekend. Clothing and school supplies were tax free as long as they are under $100 per item. The clothes can be from baby up to adult. It just has to be something you wear for every day. Shoes tax free, shoes with cleats like football or golf not. Diapers for babies and adults are tax free. The details vary from state to state.

So we were swamped in store and for drive up. One order had 500 items of school supplies. Must have been a school or church. It was a drive up order. Took two workers to load and carry out the order. Once we receive notice the person has arrived, we have three minutes to get it to the car. So stress was had all weekend.

But wait, on Monday the returns started. People often buy several sizes and the return those that don't fit. If you want a different size, now you have to pay tax on the new item since tax free is over. That goes over big time.

Now onto Halloween and then Christmas!

Woman wants to do a return. Refunded an item with a receipt. No problem. Then she starts digging in her handbag looking for a different receipt to do another return. Can't seem to find it. Says that the person who helped at a different store must not have given her her receipt back. Then she asks me if I gave her back the receipt from the return I just did. I point to it laying in front of her. She moves to the side and digs in her handbag again. She finds the one she was looking for and I do that return. She goes off into the store.

A few minutes later she is back. I'm with a different person doing a return. My coworker tries to help her. She hands her a bag with clothes in it. My coworker asks if she has a receipt for this item. Woman starts saying it's in with the clothes. No receipt in the bag. She starts yelling at my coworker. Turns out it was in a different bag. Then she starts cursing about kids in the fitting room making too much noise. Says kids shouldn't be allowed in the fitting room. She must have said "f*ck" a dozen times in less than five minutes. We just ignored her and gave her her return. Why? Why do people feel they act act like that?

I've worked retail since I was in high school. It's not an easy job or one that pays very well. You come into contact with all kinds of people. Add on COVID-19 and it adds a horrible twist.

There are those who refuse to wear masks. Those who think they are above policies. "Karen's" abound.

People go crazy. They think if they create a stink they get their way. We stopped selling certain trading cards for safety reasons. Now we are slowly adding a few gaming cards back with limitations. No lining up before we open or standing inside waiting for the vendor. Limits on daily purchases. One man argued with security last week wanting to talk to store manager to make a deal. He was one of the worst jerks before we stopped selling the cards a few months ago.

A woman tried to return bags of clothes and shoes. She had a receipt for two items. I checked all her credit cards for the rest of the items, but nothing was there. I tried to use her driver's license, but she had maxed it out. She had lost her unemployment and wanted cash. All of the items were clearly used. My manager had been watching and when called told her we couldn't do anything more. I'm sure she will try again at another store or come back when I'm not there.

A guest told us there was a bag in the parking lot leaking. It had a dead animal in it. My team lead had to clean it up. Only those who have taken certain lessons can clean up toxic spills. I felt so bad for her.

We do have some wonderful guests who make it better. Those keep me sane. Thankful there are many more great guests than the crazies

So the other evening, a man came into our store with no mask. The young woman working at Guest Service offered him a mask for free. He told her it was his right not to wear a mask and then pointed to his concealed weapon. Now this young woman is Muslim and wears a Hijab. She is very professional and sweet as can be. She felt like he threatened her. I so wish we could refuse to allow people like him into the store. This is happening more often. I don't know if it's because of the election or just stupid in general. There are signs at the front doors stating the government of Texas has declared it mandatory to wear masks since July. If you want to risk your and your family's health, that is your business. Just don't threaten mine or others by a gun or virus.

I'm amazed how this virus has brought out the different sides of people. I work retail and we are still open. This week my company decided not to accept returns or exchanges. Most understand why. Some react so very crazy. We are extending the return window so things will be taken back in a few weeks. They can also return through the mail. This to prevent exposure to the virus. A woman was refused an exchange and explained why. She started yelling and calling the manager horrible names. She threw a trash can. It almost hit another customer. We had to call the police. One person was shown the sign that states the policy. He came back and demanded to know why. The virus can live on products for hours up to days. That is why we are trying to avoid exposing both workers and customers. He left mad. Yet everyday I have several customers say thank you for my being careful and helping them. I could take paid leave for a month, but would rather save that till I really might need it.

Working retail sucks all the joy out of the holidays.  Work is so stressful, you tend to forget
that Christmas is sneaking up on you.  As it is, I will be home alone on Christmas Eve and
Christmas Day.  Well, I'll be under a blanket with Athena snuggled up in my lap, I'm sure.
Tommy the best best friend in the world will be at his mom's on Christmas Eve and with
his sister's family till he has to go into work on Christmas night.  My son is leaving with his
girlfriend to be with her family for Christmas Eve and Day.  Then they will go camping till the
New Year.  So it will be just me and my Athena.  I might get some rest finally.

I've had a couple of crappy weeks.
Now the holiday season is starting.
Working retail sucks all the joy out of it.
I needed this video to make me smile.

Did you notice the knife handle is by the dog's left ear. Then
it's on the right side. A moment later, it's back on the left side. LOL!

The little girl checks out what was dropped into the dog's pumpkin. The
dog doesn't move, but his eyes go to the little girl.  A really well trained dog.

The retail company I work for has it's own credit card and
a debit card that gives the customer extra benefits.
With either card you get 5% of most merchandise.
You get free shipping from our online site. You get
an extra thirty days to return items. Also you can select
a school you chose to received 1% of what you spend.
What the card does not do is give you a brain.

Retail is draining enough without stupid people like this.
Yes, this sort of thing happens all the time.

Worst thing is if one of them gets hurt, the parents would sue us.

Last week I was doing a return for a lady.  She said, "I was here the
last two days andyou weren't."  There was another lady standing behind
her.  Second lady says,"Tuesdays and Weds are her days off." That
happens quite often.   People know my schedule and plan around it
for their returns.

As I was going into work this week, the manager of our Starbucks stopped me.
His son, M,  is what we call a GSA.  Basically M has the position of watching over
the front end.  He supervises the cashiers, guest service and cart attendants.  M, in
my opinion, is far too young for this job.  He is just out of his teens and still more
about playing than working.  His dad told me M had been arrested during my days off.
Seems M, a cashier and a guest had been involved in coupon fraud.  Dad said M
called a manager to the check out, but manager was too busy. M claims manager
told him to handle it.  That's one story.  Others said M knew the guest and had approved
use of coupons for her before this time.

I survived Black Friday pretty well. Was tired, but otherwise it wasn't too bad.
They had to change my original schedule because they set me to work on
Thursday night at 8:30pm till Black Friday morning at 4:30am. Wouldn't
have been a problem, but they wanted me back at 8am on Black Friday.
A seven and half hour shift with three and a half hours off till I was to go
back and work another eight hours. That wasn't about to happen.
More than you ever want to know about retail.... )

The Story of Thanksgiving by The Ellen DeGeneres Show Players

May your turkey be tender and moist.
May your relatives be nice to you and
not make you crazy.
May your football team win and your
nap be refreshing.

If you shop on Black Friday, please
be nice to the employees in the stores.
They most likely gave up time with their
families to set up the store and serve
you while you shopped.

Some hate holidays because they mean visiting with family you really don't
care to see the rest of the year.  Some just hate the hype.  Some like me had
holidays ruined for them by working retail.

There have been years where I didn't even put a Christmas tree.  I was so busy
at work I would just be too tired to do it.  People are stressed out and they take it
out on people like me. They know I can't respond the way I would like so they vent.

Then there are moments that make it all worth it.  I have so many wonderful people
who I meet where I work.  They are a joy to talk to and make my day each  time I see
them.

I had one of those moments this week and ended up tearing up.  A young woman who
is mentally challenged comes in several times a month to return something or pay her
credit card bill.  She is always very sweet and makes me smile.  This week she came
in to pay her bill.  Her mother came in with her this time.  The mother told me they were
moving to another state and wanted to say goodbye.  Seems her other daughter just had
twin girls so they were moving closer to be with her.

The mother wanted to thank me for being so nice to her daughter.  She said so often
people were not kind to her and I always was.  I thanked her and tried very hard not to
cry.  I failed horribly.

My company has a pretty easy return policy.
Things can be returned within 90 days for most things.
Some can only be returned within 45. Like electronics,
cameras, DVDS and stuff like vaccumms. After that you
need to contact the manufacture for repair or replacement.
Items with a copyright have to be unopened or you can only
exchange them. That's government law...it applies to all
retail companies.

Most returns are done with a receipt, but if you don't have
one we can look it up with the form of payment.  If you used
a credit card, debit card, check or even a gift card that you
still have, we can attempt to look it up.

Returns that are over the 45/90 day limits or we can't find in the system
are more difficult. We can use a Government ID to do a return, but it will give
you the lowest price in the last 90 days.  You can only do $70 in twelve months
with an ID as well.  After that amount we can only do an exchange for equal amount.

If the item is no longer in our system with a price,  we can't do much at all.

Stupid people are stupid )

A while back I posted about customers who purchased items with coupons
and then returned them. At that time we gave them back what they paid plus
the amount of the coupon.  So the shelves were stripped of certain items
for real customers till the shelves could be restocked.  Then when these
"special" customers returned massive amount of merchandise, we had
extra merchandise that ended up as backstock.  Plus certain items couldn't
be returned to the shelves.  Over the counter meds,  food, and baby formula
often had to be destroyed or returned to the manufacturer due to safety concerns.

New store coupon policy )

It started yesterday.  I can't wait till one of these "special" customers tries to do a return.  Hee!

[Error: unknown template qotd]Job related: Do you keep women's clothing any where besides in Women's Wear?

Guy in his thirties returned an item with no receipt so he got a gift card.
Explain to Guy, "You can use this gift card on anything in the store."
Guy smirks and say, "Can I buy you?"
Seriously, I'm almost sixty and this guy is about thirty.

Personal: Do you color/frost your hair?  Oh yeah, I pay big bucks to have Gray hair. *frowns*

 General Retail Rant

Total idiot comes up to me demanding a comment card.
I give him one and ask if there is anything I can do to help him.
Total idiot says, "Your company is unAmerican.  You don't sell B B Guns!"

Very old man comes up and wants to pay his credit card bill.  Has a check all written out.
I ask for either his statement or his credit card so I can  process the payment.  We can use either to do a payment.
Seems he just got out of the hospital. While he was in there, his wife shredded both the statement and the card.
I tried to explain I couldn't process a payment without either the statement , the credit card or at least the card number.
We have do not have any access to customer information at store level.  Very old man gets upset and starts to yell at me.  I call my manager who explains that we can't process a payment with out the statement, credit card or card number.
Man gets even more upset and starts to shake.

I offered to call the credit dept of our company, but explained they would not give out any information to me. They will only talk to the card holder. The very old man get upset again and says he is hard of hearing and can't talk on the phone.  So he refused to talk to anyone at the credit dept.  Then he says since I won't take his payment, he doesn't owe any money to the company.  I told him I did not say that.  I said I couldn't process his payment with the information he was able to give me.

He stormed off saying they would just have to put him in jail for not making his payment.  His payment was only about $11.

We match ads with certain conditions.  We don't match ads that required a card to get the sale price.
We only match national brands. We only do the matching at the guest service desk.

Guest went to regular register first with ads and was brought over to me after she checked out. She
had an ad we don't match due to the loyalty card required.  She got very nasty about it.  We did match
one from a different ad that we do accept. She still got nasty and muttered "I'll never buy from here again."
When she left, another guest  said, "I hate people like that. I'm a nurse and we get it all the time."

A few minutes later, a couple came in with a cart full of things they received for wedding presents.
They only had a few gift receipts so I helped them print off their gift purchase log from their wedding
gift registry.  It allows them to return things with out gift receipts. They were so sweet. They ended up
with over $400 on a gift card. They kept thanking me for helping them. It was so nice to have someone
be decent instead of ugly.

You talked all week about how a guy friend was coming from out of state to visit you.

You told everyone you work with that you were going to the State Fair on Sat with this guy friend.

You begged everyone to work your shift on Sunday because you had someone visiting you and you were
going to the State Fair on Sat.

You posted all of it on your Facebook page.

How do you think it looked when you called in on Sunday less than two hours before your shift?

How dumb are some people?

And you wonder why you can't get promoted?
